Copyright is the ability for a business or individual to own the exclusive legal rights to an original literary, dramatic, musical, or artistic work. Owning the copyright means that you can control how it is used in order to protect its value, and most importantly allows you to control who has the right to use your works.
Examples of copyright (as outlined by the Government of Canada):
- literary works: books, pamphlets, computer programs and other works consisting of text;
- dramatic works: motion picture films, plays, screenplays, scripts, etc.;
- musical works: musical compositions with or without words; and
- artistic works: paintings, drawings, maps, photographs, sculptures, plans, etc.
A trademark is the primary means to protect the value of your brand. Your businesses ‘brand’ is defined as anything identifying it, including its name, products, services, taglines, slogans, or even sounds. Utilizing trademarks enables you to protect the competitive advantage that makes the ongoing success of your business possible.
